With all of the talk that a student must hear about getting ready for college, some students may raise the pertinent question, Why go to college in the first place? It is a very important question that has different answers for different people. For some students, making the decision to obtain a higher education can be difficult. Students must overcome several obstacles, and some of the reasons students decide not to go to college are: No one in their family has gone to college; They didnt do well in high school, so college will be too hard; They dont know which school to go to; or They cant afford college. These are some tough barriers to overcome, but if taken one step at a time it can be done. Being the first one in the family to seek higher education can be a difficult hurdle for any student to get over. High school guidance counselors and college advisors can be a valuable resource. Some admissions departments will walk the students through the entire application process from start to end. Study habits are a key element when starting college, and many career colleges also offer free tutoring to their students. CONCEPTUAL PARADIGM FRAME 1 – It shows the dependent variables consisting of the different factors (Poverty, Family, Intellectual Ability, Teen Pregnancy, Peers, and Age Gap) for our study. FRAME 2 – It shows the independent variable of why students do not want to continue their studies in the college level. Poverty â€Å"Poverty is considered as the bottom line that hinders education. † â€Å"I cant afford it. † There is no doubt that poverty runs rampant in either rural or urban places. Welcome to the age of financial aid, community college, and work-study options. Many high school students today are aware that their parents cannot afford to foot their tuition bill. This is a common reality, but it doesn’t mean that the students themselves can’t afford college on their own. Education is rumored to be the great equalizer where people from any social class are given the opportunity to excel and rise in fortune. However, some would argue that those who do live in poverty lack the resources and support at home to take full advantage of their education without assistance. Contrarily, others would claim that children of poverty are capable of performing at high levels, and believe making assumptions about a whole group is simply stereotyping which causes teachers to lower expectations and, in turn, actually lower student achievement. However there are numerous financial aid programs available for students, especially for students whose families cannot help them or students who have low incomes themselves. Although the colleges and universities of today carry a heavy price tag, it is of great importance not to let that discourage you from obtaining a college education. The cost of tuition continues to rise, so too does the number of available financial aid options. Below are examples on how you can pay for college: Summer Job: Students save the money they make in the summers. Part-time Job: While at school many students have a part-time job and earn money for school. Scholarships: Colleges give money to students based on financial need, academic talent and extracurricular talent (i. e. sports). This doesn’t need to be paid back. Grants: Colleges give money to students based on financial need. This also doesn’t need to be paid back. Loan: Colleges will lend students and parents money to help pay for school. This money needs to be paid back with interest. Gift: Money given to a student to help pay for school and doesn’t need to be repaid. Gifts often come from family and friends. Savings: Money students have set aside in the past (i. e. in a bank) to pay for college. â€Å"Money Spent on College Education Would Be Better Invested in Starting Your Own Business. † If you are your own boss, you dont need a piece of paper to prove to an employer that youre worthy of being hired by him. You dont have to worry about sucking up to your boss or getting along with your co-workers. Everyone know an employee undergoes all kinds of stress having to deal with co-workers and bosses. Employees are stuck with their co-workers and stuck with their boss. The only way of getting rid of them is to quit your job. Be your own boss and you dont have to put up with that kind of crap. Bill Gates didnt need a college diploma to start Microsoft. In fact he doesnt have one and neither do a lot of entrepreneurs and people who have made great contributions to society. 2. Family The smallest foundation of a society is the family. A group into which and individual belongs and is subjected to support his needs and some of his wants. â€Å"My parents didn’t go to college and they were successful, why should I bother? †/â€Å"Nobody in my family has ever gone. † For students whose parents found success without obtaining a degree, it can be difficult to see the logic behind dropping fifty grand on an education. Such students should consider this: you aren’t your folks. They own their success and they began working at a time when a college degree wasn’t necessarily the only way to get the job that they wanted. Unfortunately, those times are pretty well over. Currently, there are more college graduates than ever before. This influx of educated applicants has influenced the workplace. Simply put, employers have more candidates holding diplomas to choose from and are no longer necessary to consider applicants without a degree. A diploma is now standard prerequisite for many jobs that did not require education in the past. If no one in your family has completed college, it can be very intimidating to be the first to attend. However, being the first to earn a degree can be a very satisfying experience, and possibly inspire other family members to attend. 3. Intellectual Ability â€Å"Self-education is better than forced feeding. † You can learn more, develop your brain better and have more knowledge than most college graduates simply by reading 2 hours a night. Such subjects as art, history, literature, foreign languages, music appreciation as well as many other subjects can be self-taught. The learning resources are available on the internet and in public libraries. Why pay money for something you can get for free? All that is required is self-discipline rather than someone standing over you threatening you with failure if you dont study and pass tests! The beauty of being self-taught is that then you will learn what you are truly motivated to learn, what you are really interested in rather than courses that are required to get your degree. Such courses will be immediately forgotten once the final has been passed . Many contributors to human knowledge were autodidacts, that is people who were sufficiently interested in whatever field to teach it to themselves. Such geniuses as Sir Isaac Newton and Gottfried Liebniz, who simultaneously developed calculus, were largely self-taught. A lot of great musicians and artists are self-taught. The only reason to actually go to college is to get credentialed in a field that you really want to enter, and then it should be possible to just take an exam in order to gain the credential. Abraham Lincoln taught himself law and passed the bar without the benefit of a college education or diploma. Then he was actually able to make money at it all without the benefit of a college degree. Today, of course, we are much more civilized, requiring our lawyers to have a college degree in addition to passing the bar. Anything you can learn in college you can learn on your own. If you want the equivalent of a college education, find out the course list and reading lists for any degree of the college of your choice. Then read all the same books. Anything you want to know is available on the internet. Why study a lot of boring stuff youre not interested in? You wont retain it anyway. Most college students study enough to regurgitate on a test and then immediately forget it. Its wasted time and energy. Study and learn what youre interested in instead of what is required. That way you only will be learning what you have a passion for. Most people that are successful in their professions have a passion for what they do, not merely a ticket of admission to the field of their choice which is what a college degree represents. We get many high school students telling us â€Å"My GPA is not good enough to get into college. † It’s one of the biggest stumbling blocks that people get tripped up with when it comes to the college application process. But GPA is only one of the many different criteria that colleges use to decide whether they will admit a student. Since you don’t work for a college admissions board, it is not right for you to decide whether or not you have the grades to make it in. Don’t sell yourself short and don’t assume that you won’t be able to go to the school of your choice based on what you heard or read in a forum. â€Å"My grades aren’t so great†/â€Å"My GPA Is Not Good Enough to Get Into College† There’s only one way for you to determine whether or not your GPA is good enough to get into the college that you’d like to go to. That is to apply to the college, fill out the application, write the essays to the best of your ability, wait, and see. If you think you don’t have the right GPA for a school and you don’t even apply, then you’ll never know and you made up the school’s mind as well by not even applying. Perhaps you heard that a school has a minimum GPA requirement, or you saw a chart that showed that they mostly choose students with a particular grade point average. You need to remember that rules are made to be bent or broken, most schools do not specifically use your GPA as the only criteria and in many instances, and it is not even the most important criteria. Schools want a well-rounded student body, not just a bunch of eggheads walking around the campus. Sell your other qualities to the school of your choice and give them a compelling reason to accept you. Admissions boards know this and they take a chance on a percentage of students each semester. Your goal is to be in that percentage of â€Å"interesting applicants†. Write an essay that really blows them away. Hopefully you were involved in extra-curricular activities while you were in high school, and if you weren’t get involved in things in your local community. There’s no better time to start than now when it comes to adding things to your life that can go on your admissions application. Pay the minimum necessary to procure whatever credentials you need to practice that trade or profession. Learn it on your own. The only college degrees worth having are in the thousand year old professions such as law, architecture, civil engineering, medicine. In these professions you can hang out your own shingle be in business for yourself. Forget high tech and anything that requires you to work for a corporation or as an employee and doesnt let you have the option of starting your own business. These degrees are worthless. As a laborer with a college degree, no matter how high tech, you are just a commodity. As a self-employed businessman, you call the shots, make the profits and build a business which has a value in itself, which can be sold some day if you choose to do so. Live simply and on the cheap when youre starting out pouring most of your money into your fledgling business. Be homeless if you have to. Live in your car or work vehicle. If you have a shop or storefront, live there. No sense in paying 2 rents. After you get going, you will be able to afford to move up in the world. 5. Peers Friends are meant to construct and improve you. They will serve as our second family though it is our responsibility to sift and choose the real ones. The wrong choices are the ones who bring you to a habit that they themselves perform; for example Marijuana use and Alcohol. Marijuana Use Marijuana use is only topped by alcohol. An estimated 40. 1% of students over the age of 12, and 49. 1% of college students have used marijuana. This is probably due to the easy accessibility of marijuana. To get alcohol, someone has to know a person that is of age. However, to get marijuana, there is no age limit, making it easy to purchase. This shows that students are more likely to drink more alcohol in a short period of time having a higher chance of being in an accident. Drinking excessively at an early age can also affect the brain also. The result of drinking at an early age makes it difficult for a healthy brain to grow causing long term effects to the health. Most students don’t realize the long term effects of alcohol, but it’s very severe and will damage the body immensely. The start to having an unhealthy body is drinking so much that the liver becomes scarred. This is the first step to deteriorating the liver. There are also other organs affected by excessive drinking too like; the heart and brain. The liver is a very important organ in the body that supports it. There are more than one disease that can harm the liver such as; fatty liver, hepatitis, and cirrhosis. The earliest stage of liver disease is fatty liver which is developed when the liver is clogged with fat. This only happens because drinking causes the liver to be unable to transfer the fat but filter the alcohol. The result of this is the liver cells become swollen with water and fat. When this happens the body lacks nutrients and oxygen to the liver cells, this kills the cell which. When the liver has been scarred it becomes irreversible and will be a permanent part of the liver. When this occurs the blood that travels through the liver doesn’t properly filter the toxins. Not being able to filter the toxin as mentioned by the college drinking prevention, can lead to mental confusion, agitation, or tremors. The heart is also a very sensitive organ that is affected by drinking also. The heart is such a small organ that when you drink you work the heart a lot harder than it’s necessary. This makes it possible for the person to have a heart attack or a stroke. Continuing with excessive drinking will lead other heart problems such as: cardiomyopathy, cardiac arrhythmia, and sudden cardiac death. Alcohol also affects the stomach and the brain. The stomach can easily be damaged when students drink excessively, especially when the excess alcohol is left in the stomach to irritate the stomach lining. This leads to damage of the stomach lining and loss of nutrition to the body. The brain damage is only possible in young teens that drink. Drinking has only been known to affect the growth of the brain in adolescence but no evident long term effects are present. 6. Age gap There is only a chance to attend and start schooling but if you fail to meet that chance you wouldn’t want to have another. Being inside a class full of students whom your child may have befriended may be embarrassing. As opposed to generations of the past, high school graduates today are unable to obtain the number of high-paying jobs that were once available. The U. S. has been transformed from a manufacturing-based economy to an economy based on knowledge, and the importance of a college education today can be compared to that of a high school education forty years ago. It serves as the gateway to better options and more opportunity. There are additional reasons as to why it is important to go to college. When students experience a post secondary education, they have the opportunity to read books and listen to the lectures of top experts in their fields. This stimulation encourages students to think, ask questions, and explore new ideas, which allows for additional growth and development and provides college graduates with an edge in the job market over those who have not experienced a higher education. The importance of a college education is also accentuated because of the opportunity to gain valuable resources during your tenure. The more connections which are collected during your college career, the more options you will have when you begin your job search. Once you have ended your job search and have started your career, however, the importance of a college education has not been exhausted. Having a college degree often provides for greater promotion opportunity. So, why should you go to college? The reasoning does not begin and end with the job aspect. A good education is beneficial from many different viewpoints, and while the importance of a college education is quite evident for many high school students, what is often not as clear is how they will pay for that education. â€Å"Understanding the Importance of College Education† If you are still asking yourself why should you go to college, it is important to remember the significant amount of opportunity available for college graduates. The 10 Most Common Excuses for NOT Going to College and Why Theyre All Wrong! EXCUSE #1: Nobody in my family has ever gone to college before. Why not be the first? Its true that being the first to do anything can be difficult and maybe even a little frightening, but being the first in your family to receive a college education should give you a sense of pride. Not going to college is the kind of family tradition you should break. EXCUSE #2: My grades are not good enough for college. How do you know theyre not unless you apply? College is a big change from high school. The competition will be greater and the homework assignments will be longer and tougher. And it isnt always easy to adjust to strange surrounding and make new friends. But once you get involved with your work, youll find that many of your classmates feel as you do. Who doesnt worry sometimes that they might not make it? And even if you find that youre not doing well in certain subjects, you can still do something about it. Tutoring is available from professors or fellow students, and counseling for personal problems is available on campus too. EXCUSE #6: Im not sure that Ill fit in in college. Just about any college you might attend will have students from all kinds of backgrounds, so you are sure to find other people whom you can relate to. If youre a minority student, for example, find about student clubs sponsored by African Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, Native Americans, Asians, or other groups. Such clubs can help give you a sense of community away from home. Regardless of your ethnic background, you should remember that one of the good things about college is getting to know all kinds of people. It will be interesting to learn about different life-styles and cultures, and it will help prepare you for the world you will face after graduation. EXCUSE #7: I dont even know what I want to major in or do with my life. The great majority of college freshmen dont have a clue about these things either. Giving you choices is what college is all about. You can take courses in different fields and see what you like and what youre good at. You may be surprised to find a subject or a career field that you never would have thought of before. The biggest mistake you can make is to think that any decision you make is cast in concrete and that you can never change your major or your life. EXCUSE #8: Theres no way I can go to college full-time. So go part-time. Most colleges offer programs you can attend in the evening or on weekends. Some colleges even give classes where you work or in neighborhood churches and community centers. You can also study many subjects through correspondence courses in home-study programs, and a number of states have external degree programs that let you work for a degree without believe it or not any classroom attendance! Ask your counselor about these possibilities. EXCUSE #9: Im too old to go to college. Nonsense! Youre never too old to learn. Even if youve been out of high school for a while, you can still go to college. Almost half of all full-time and part-time students in the country are adults older than 25 years of age. If they can do it, so can you! EXCUSE #10: I just want to get a good job and make lots of money. College will help you with that and more. Studies have shown that a college graduate will earn several hundred thousand dollars more during the course of his or her working life than someone who has only a high school diploma. Of course, money isnt everything, but most challenging and interesting jobs with good futures require a college education. A college degree will also give you a greater variety of job choices. Theres something else that college will give you: a sense of personal satisfaction, confidence, and self-respect. These are not easy to measure, but they are very important in helping you become the kind of person you want to be. There are probably many other reasons you can think of for not going to college. But why sit arouind making up excuses when you can use that time and energy to do something that will benefit you the rest of your life? The Problem of Evil: Augustine and Irenaeus Paper Explain how the theodicy of Irenaeus differs from that of Augustine. One of the main arguments used by non-believers against the existence of God is the presence of evil and suffering in the world. The term ‘evil’ is often used to describe something that is morally wrong. Philosophers make a distinction between moral evil and natural evil. Moral evil results from human actions that are morally reproachable, and Natural evil results from the malfunctioning of the natural world, which produces entities such as disease and famine. St Augustine (354 – 430CE) based his arguments on the Bible, especially the accounts of the creation and the fall in Genesis. His influential theodicy rests upon two major assumptions; evil did not come from God since God’s creation was faultless and perfect, and evil came from elsewhere and God is justified in allowing it to stay. Augustine started from the assumption that God is wholly good and that God created a world free from faults. Following the teaching in Genesis 1, Augustine emphasised that ‘All God has made pleased Him’; suffering and evil were therefore unknown. He made the logical point that it is not possible for God to be responsible for evil since evil is ‘not a substance’. Instead, evil refers to what is lacking in a thing; it is a ‘privation of good’. Augustine used the analogy of blindness, which is not an entity in itself but an absence of sight. If God cannot have created evil, Augustine traced its origin to those areas within the world that have free will; specifically, angels and human beings. These abused God’s gift of freedom and chose wilfully to turn their attention away from God, the supreme good, and to idolise instead ‘lesser goods’. Having explained the origin of evil, Augustine went on to show that all suffering is a fully deserved consequence of human sin. Natural evil originated from the loss of order within nature following the first sin. This destroyed the delicate balance of the world. From then on, there was to be hostility between humans and other creatures. Humans would have to battle constantly to grow enough food. Through His grace, however, God sent His son to die on the cross so that some might be saved and go to Heaven. This shows that God is merciful as well as just. Irenaeus (c. 130 – 202CE), as with Augustine, traced evil back to human free will. He differs in that he admits that God did not make a perfect world and that evil has a valuable role to play in God’s plan for humans. Unlike Augustine, Irenaeus admitted that God is partly responsible for evil. His responsibility extends to creating humans imperfectly, and making it their task to develop to perfection. This idea is based upon Irenaeus’ interpretation of Genesis, where God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. ’ Irenaeus concluded that at first, humans were made in God’s image and only later would develop into His likeness. For Irenaeus, being in God’s image involved having intelligence, morality, and personality, yet it lacked completion. Completion would only be gained upon transformation into God’s likeness. It was Irenaeus’ claim that evil was an essential means to this transformation. Irenaeus explained that humans did choose evil, which is why the fall occurred. But although evil clearly makes life difficult, it nevertheless is beneficial in that it enables us to understand what good is; â€Å"How, if we had no knowledge of the contrary, could we have instruction in that which is good? † – Irenaeus. We know that stories can vary in purpose: They can either teach a moral lesson or entertain. Some stories interest us; others do not. In order for a story to be interesting, it must be told in a way that does not bore or confuse the reader. This story must have elements that attenuate to a central purpose. These elements (setting, character, plot, point of view, symbol, theme, etc.) forge the thoughts and ideas of the author. Joyce Carol Oates Stalking tells the tale of a young girl growing up in modern suburbia. Stalking is a critical review of modern American society and shows the detrimental effects that it can have on a young child. The main character in this story is stalking the Invisible Adversary, who is the personification of the neglect that she has received in her life. In order to send this message to the reader, Oates emphasizes the point of view of the main character, plot, and setting in her short story Stalking. The narrator of Stalking is omniscient as she follows the main character, Gretchen, throughout a city. She shows us that Gretchen is anti-social: If forced, she takes part in games (Oates 162) and she just stands around, her face empty, her arms crossed and her shoulders a little slumped (162). We also see that Gretchen is oblivious: Gretchen waits until [traffic] is nearly cleara single car is approaching. (Oates 161) and she plods through a jumbled, bulldozed field of mud and thistles and debris that is mainly rocks and chunks of glass (162). Although the narrator visually guides us on this journey, she also lets us into the mind of Gretchen - we see things from Gretchens point of view. Thoughts of Ill get you (Oates 161)Out of my wayYoull be sorry for that(162) shows us that Gretchen is angry and spiteful. Her anger and spitefulness are directed towards her Invisible Adversary - an imaginary playmate that she has created. Why is she angry, anti-social, and spiteful? Why is she stalking the Invisible Adversary? The linear plot quickly builds in this story and answers our questions at the end. As the Invisible Adversary leads Gretchen from place to place around town, Gretchen continues to shows us her audacious behavior everywhere she goes. In one afternoon, she knocks over a garbage can, steals, vandalizes a restroom, and ruins a dress. Her reckless attitude is further shown when the narrator describes Gretchens appearance. She is stocky and could be good at gym, if she bothered (Oates 162). There is also a bit of irony and contradiction when the narrator describes her face. She has untidy, curly haireyebrows heavy and darka stern, staring look, like an adult man(Oates 164). Her nose is perfectly formedher face is attractive (Oates 165). We now know that she was not born unattractive; she chooses to be unattractive. A precursor for the explanation of Getchens behavior is when she does not acknowledge h er mother at the mall. That moment in the story indicates that Gretchen feels some resentment towards her mother. We later find out why she resents them - Her mother is probably still shopping, her father is out of town for the weekend (Oates 166). Gretchens parents neglect her. She fills the void in her life, created by her parents neglect, by creating an Invisible Adversary. Of course, she is angered by their neglect and therefore is angry with the Invisible Adversary. Oates places this story in modern suburban America (no later than 1972). Without this setting the story does not have much meaning. Gretchens parents neglect is caused by the leisure of modern America. Gretchen is raised in a big white colonial home (Oates 166) where her mother is engrossed in shopping and her father is out on a business or fishing trip. Even though she is raised in a house of comfort and privilege, she is unhappy with her life. Not even the material objects in a nearby shopping mall can please her. In fact, she defiles anything that represents privilege and comfort, including her white boots, lipstick, toothpaste, a dress, her home, and herself. The narrator

How to Teach the Present Perfect for ESL Students The present perfect is one of the most difficult tenses to learn for students. Teaching the present perfect effectively involves making sure students understand that the present perfect in English is always connected in some way to the present moment in time. Many languages including French, German, Spanish and Italian use the present perfect for past events. The present perfect in English covers what happens from a past moment to the present moment in time. Establishing this connection in students minds early will help students avoid mistakes. It helps to divide usage into three major areas: 1) From the past until now: Ive lived in New York for twenty years. 2) Life experience: Ive visited every state in the country. 3) Recent past events that influence the present moment: Ive just had lunch. Start by Speaking about Your Experiences Introduce the present perfect by providing three short situations One about life experiences, one speaking about some things that started in the past and continue into the present. Finally, also illustrate the present perfect for events that influence the present moment in time. Speak about yourself, your family or your friends. Life Experience: Ive visited many countries in Europe. Ive been to Germany and France a few times. My wife has also been in Europe quite a lot. After having studied the past simple, students should recognize that many past verbs in -ed whereas others have irregular forms. Introduce the past participle form use in the present perfect. Its a good idea to provide an irregular verb sheet for future reference. Use three timelines showing the differences between usages: life experience, past to present, and recent events. At this point in the curriculum, students should easily be able to switch between positive, negative and question forms. However, its important to point out that questions in the present perfect are most often formed with How long for past to present usage, and Have you ever..? for life experiences. Finally, for present perfect that affects the present moment, its important that students understand the differences between the time expressions just, yet and already as well as for and since for past to present. Comprehension Activities Each of these uses of the present perfect can be practiced through present perfect role plays and reading comprehension activities. Its also a good idea to compare and contrast time expressions used for the present perfect and past simple. Present perfect worksheets and quizzes focusing on differences asking students to choose between the present perfect or the past simple will also help. To practice switching between the present perfect and the simple past practice short conversations with Have you ever...? followed by a question asking for specifics with when, or where. The sheer power and brute force humbled the indigenous population and this was the method, which was to be used by later colonial powers. English settlers tried their luck at the East and there the indigenous population despite its variation lived in similar ways. They depended on agriculture, which was done by female population. Indigenous population did not keep herds of domestic animals and Male population used to hunt and fish. They used to live in family groups but loyal to larger kin and clan. There used to be one chief, who ruled by consent. The first major impact of colonialism on indigenous population was epidemic diseases. The life style of local population was different as they never kept herds and never lived with animals. On the other hand Europeans and Asian used to live near their domestic animals. The diseases, which were spread in the local population, resulted in the death of countless people. Mann says that "what happened after Columbus was like a thousand kudzus everywhere." When you start school you are thrown into a mix of people, some can read already and write while others don’t even know their name. If you start kindergarten and you are already so far behind than it’s hard to catch back up. If the child wasn’t shown their numbers before because their parents didn’t help them very much while they were growing up. If as a parent you isolate your children by not educating them or leaving them by themselves while doing homework than they’re going to have a hard time trying to figure out what to do, and they know that their parents aren’t there to check in on the homework. Whenever you send the children away to school yes they are away but you need to help and stay informed because it isn’t always the students fault that they are getting in trouble maybe they just don’t understand something or the teacher isn’t explaining it the way they need to learn it. As a parent you need to help your children out because it will affect their outcome in life, because if every time they try and ask a question and the teacher yells at them obviously they aren’t going to ask; but if as a parent they stay informed with the teacher than the parent can help on the home end too. Socioeconomic standing is very important to how a child will develop. In low socioeconomic areas there is very poor education, low parental control, and a high gang/violence rate. If you are brought up with only knowing the life of the streets you have a higher percentage of staying there. This is because you are â€Å"born into it†, if you have the ability to go to a high achieving school get good grades and have peers that do the same then obviously you are going to do better. For an example I inserted the graph above if you are born into a higher-class family you are more than likely going to stay there, but if you are born into a lower class family you are more likely to stay there (graph found on You’re Born Into It America sited in the bibliography). There is the example of gang violence, which is an element that thrives in the lower class; it gives power, brotherhood, family and money. Gangs are a large part of what hold some of the brightest people back. In California alone males ranging from 7th-12th grade 50.9% of males were associated with gangs; that was in 2010. Living in a socioeconomically depressed neighborhood makes it hard enough to get out and make it on your own but the fact that there are gangs influencing these minors left and right make it even harder. A great example of someone growing out of a socioeconomically depressed neighborhood is Julian Castro who was the first Latino keynote speaker at the Democratic National Convention. Castro was raised in San Antonio by a single mother who worked her hardest to proved all she could for her two sons. Julian and his brother Joaquà ­n both worked very hard to get out of their depressed area so that they could provide for their mother. They both graduated from high school and were accepted to Stanford, then to Harvard. These to Hispanics made the choice to be hard working and expand their view on living, they knew there was more to life than not having anything. One of the main reasons they were able to do so well is that their mother and grandmother helped them as much as they could. Julian became the first keynote speaker to be a Latino because he wanted to beat the odds; he did not want to end up like the people he saw around him. Another great story is President Barak Obama’s he was born in Hawaii, his father and mother both left him to be brought up by his grandparents. They did not have very much money and Barry had to find his own way to pay for college since no one set that up for him. Obama had a very hard life growing up, working multiple jobs, keeping his grades up, studying for tests and trying to get scholarships so he could go to college. He did it though, and now he is the most important man in the United States and possibly the world. He worked his way out of the life he had as a child and did not want that life for his future children. In president Obama’s speech after the 2012 election he said â€Å"†¦you, the American people, reminded us that while our road has been hard, while our journey has been long, we have picked ourselves up, we have fought our way back, and we know in our hearts that for the united states of America, the best is yet to come.† He was speaking of each persons individual journey in this country, you have the choice to grow up and try and your hardest to make a better life for yourself even if your parents are not there all the time. The U.S.’s census bureau reported that around 30% of families in America are being headed by a single parent. These houses may be dysfunctional and â€Å"doomed to failure† (usg.org) but many people that have grown up in a single parent home have had just as much attention as someone that has two parents. In America, 22 million children have a one-parent household, a mother runs 83% of those houses and half of those mothers do not receive any type of child support to help out. Not receiving child support have put 70% of single parent moms in poverty making on average $13,00 annually. Currently there are over 9.8 million mothers as a single parent. Living in that type of poverty is hard to do but plenty of people are able to do it and grow up and become an amazing person with a great future. The people who say that because they live in poverty they are always going to be poor are going to stay there because it takes hard work and dedication to grow out of the socioeconom ically depressed neighborhood you grew up in. In 2000 the National Assessment of Educational Progress found that 90% of 4th grade parents participated in parent-teacher conferences among the 8th grade that number dropped to about 57%. Parents believe that once you are in middle school you can do your homework by yourself because the parents are not helpful since they do not remember it themselves. In elementary school parents are totally involved since everyone is still a â€Å"child† but you do not grow out of adolescence till you are 18 because you are not a legal adult so parents should be helping their children out till they are a senior in high school because that is why you have parents. Many schools do not even reach out to a parent if their child is failing or being suspended, because well they are an adult now. It is said that most children who have a strong parental backing through high school will do better in college. The students who have a parent helping them choose the road they follow 97% of the time make better choices when it comes to drugs, sex and partying in college. In Isanti County only 69% of parents attend conferences while the percent for lower grades is higher. Researchers say its because in elementary schools teachers have on average 20-30 children total while middle and high school teachers have over 120 students so its a lot harder to keep in touch with parents. That is why parents need to stay involved with their child’s education. Your childhood has influences on your outcome in life of course but you can change the out come of your life and make it what ever you want it to be. Being born into poverty does not mean you have to stay there the rest of your life. Parental involvement and personal goals are how you change your outcome. Obama and the Castro twins are perfect depictions of how goals that are met can make you what ever you would like to become. Childhood Sexual Abuse Impacting the Etiology of Eating Disorders Today's literature estimates that as many as 1 in 3 females and 1 in 7 boys have been the victim of sexual abuse. There are about 2,000 to 3,000 new cases of incest each year in each major city in the United States. It is reported by the National Committee to Prevent Child Abuse that in 1993, 2.9 million children were reported to protective services because they were being abused, neglected, or both (Schwartz). 16% of these 2.9 million children had been sexually abused. It is estimated that there are 60 million survivors of childhood sexual abuse in America today http://www.prevent-abuse-now.com/stats.htm#Disclosure. This childhood sexual abuse has been implicated by some eating disorder experts as a factor in the etiology of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Eating disorder experts are currently engaged in heated debate concerning whether sexual abuse is a specific risk factor or a general risk factor in the development of eating disorders. Those who propose a spec ific link hypothesis believe that eating disorders are directly related to early sexual abuse and are a form of gender specific posttraumatic stress disorder. The proponents of the specific link hypothesis believe that their exists "complex, multiple mediating mechanisms between sexual abuse and disordered eating" (Kearney-Cook, 1994). They believe that sexual abuse has a direct effect on the victims body image. There is an emphasis on the "adverse effects of sexual abuse on body esteem, self-regulation, identity, and on interpersonal functioning" (Kearney-Cook, 1994). Education Philosophy Essay

The impact of religious studies on the education system is a subject that is increasingly making many education researchers and experts invest their time on, as the world goes global and multicultural education becomes popular. This subject is especially established in the higher education context, due to the interest multicultural education is increasingly raising to educationists. This paper examines the impact Islamic philosophy and Christian philosophy, the two major religious studies, have on higher education. In spite of the fact that higher education has been increasingly becoming secularized since the late nineteenth century (Roberts and Turner, 2000), the impact the Islamic and the Christian philosophy has on higher education, globally, is immense. The Islamic philosophy, a division of Islamic studies whose main aim is synchronizing the Islamic faith and reason, draws its impact on the global higher education from Islamic religious principles and teachings. This is the fundamental reason why the subject is a major tropic of interest in the education context, given the influence that Islamic teachings and practices have to the learning processes and strategies of a student. In his book, Philosophy of education: an encyclopedia, Joseph James Chambliss writes that one of the leading issues in the Islamic philosophy of education regards how religious teachings relate with secular knowledge, or other knowledge emanating from outside the Islamic religion. Religious knowledge, for instance, is recognized by Islam as the most important source of knowledge, a fact that has a dominant influence on the education system in countries such as in the Middle East, where Islam is the religion practiced by the majority. Chambliss notes that although it is common belief that religious instructions and secular instructions are distinct, imitation of religious methods and practices is often seen in secular settings (Hoosain & Salili, 2006). One way this happens is, for instance, the recitation by heart of chapters and quotations, a practice that is common in secular schools. This practice is also common in Christianity sectors, where many students imitate practices learnt in their However, certain practices and modes of culture may have adverse impacts to higher education. One feature of Islamic philosophy involves the modes of teaching religious knowledge, whereby the religious teacher is supposed to teach unchallenged by the students, who are not encouraged to raise difficult questions requiring clarification of more than technical ideas. This is because the teacher is viewed as a transmitter of knowledge that is not supposed to be challenged, and any attempts to challenge it are taken as Islamic criticism. Under such an environment, it would seem unusual for a student to have information that would be of value. This greatly discourages student participation in the class. Moreover, the student imaginative capabilities are discouraged since by the teacher being the custodian of the truth, any imaginative attempts of the students would be viewed as a distortion of the truth . the students are not supposed to another negative impact to the higher education is on (Chambliss, 1996). Awareness in the 21st century is solely fixated on man. The man that we know of today has become that catalyst to tip eras of evolution and natural cycles that have been existing before us. I received a letter from the school explaining where I was going to be working and my Job Description and Hours, etc. The company I was going to be working for was Jacobs Babtie which is one of the leading technical and management consultancies operating in transport and development, environment, property and structures, and partnerships and outsourcing markets both in the UK and internationally. During my Working Experience The job description was very unattractive as it described that I was going to be putting PC input which was okay but then carried explaining printing maps, photocopying, etc which I rather boring. Right from the start I wanted a place related with computers, so where did they place me a place related with computer. In some ways I was looking forward to be working with computers but in some ways I dint want to go as it dint like doing photocopying or printing all day. During My Work Experience So here it came, the day I was going to work for the first time. I woke up at 7:30 as my start was at 9:30 and finished at 3:30 which I liked. While I was getting ready and eating my breakfast I kept trying to picture on what I was going to do and how my first day would go. Firstly I went in and was introduced by Jatinder Thandi who was going to look after me for the next two weeks. With Jatinder I went around the building and introduced me to other people. The building was split into two, one an office and the other a lab which took me by surprise. Basically until lunch which was at 2 oclock I walked around getting to no the place. After Lunch Jatinder introduced the programs they used which was linked with maps which I just looked into and messed with. That was It my first day finished. The only thing that came to my mind was at last. I was really looking forward to the next day but like I school I knew I had to be there. I was introduced by the health safety inspector who showed me around where the fire exits where and other information I needed to know. The place was very chilled out as you could start work went you wanted and have break and lunch anytime, it wasnt strict at all which was good. The second day I didnt really start work straight, I just sat on the computer playing about with it which they dint really mind as no one really did any work. After a while I was given a sheet full of pot holes where I had to find from using a program called GWings which is full of maps. Basically on the sheet would be where the potholes where and I would have to plot them on GWings. All through that day I carried on plotting which passed my time and had finished the day. All through the week except for Friday I was given the same thing to do which was given the same thing to do which was plotting potholes into the database. Jatinder and other staff would check on me if I was aright. As they had an inspector which would go out investigating the roads they had loads of sheets coming in everyday which would keep be busy everyday. On Friday I thought I would be doing the old boring thing but Jatinder decided that he would give me change and send me next door which was the lab, firstly I wasnt too happy as I didnt have the right dress code and would get my hands dirty but any way I dint complain. The lab would experiment the tarmac and gravel thy put on the floor to see if it was okay and suitable. A person would go out there and basically slice a hole which they would investigate. There was about 5 people working in the lab and for the first hour I just stood there working out and watching what they were doing. After a while I got stuck in there and my part was to sieve a pile of stones so they could experiment the stone as sizes not all being mixed up. I was given the job the duty of sieving all day, which in some ways I like it as I gained a different experience and in some ways I dint because it was filthy work. That was it my first week over and it was a tough one as well but gained a lot of experience. The second week I got use to the place and people as after the first week I built my confidence as at the beginning I was nervous and shy but as it went along I use to chat with the other colleagues at lunch and so on. The second week was basically the same I went back to the computer and was given a new task which was almost the same as plotting the potholes but more into depth. Again I was given a sheet with the place and street and so on where the pothole was but this time I had to write on Microsoft Excel as a database where the pot hole was, the grid reverence number, when the pothole was found and the notes about it such as how deep and how damaging it was. I on the whole got on with this and having breaks every hour which was advised for my eyes and I would just read the newspaper or something. For the next three days I continued with that and produced and evaluation with this. Now it was Thursday and had go use to the routine of getting to work at 9:30 and doing the work. Same as last week I was given a change and went into the lab and now they got use to me and I got use to the work so I got on with the work and they expected me to be like any other worker so I was rushed of to my feet that day. After Work Experience Not knowing Thursday was going to be my last day I had a great time and learned many skills. In some way I felt really happy I wasnt going to be doing that work again but in some ways I felt bad not going on the last day. I found the work experience to be a very good learning experience. This week has shown me how different working in the real world is compared to school. The working day is longer and I now feel that the school hours are much easier to cope with. I am quite pleased with what I have done this week and I will leave with new skills. I have developed many new skills both technical knowledge and personal skills.
